Freestyle Now Albany Skatepark Competition – The Sun Showed Up and So Did Albany

Albany gets around 115 days of rain a year. So when the sun showed up for the Freestyle Now Albany Skatepark Competition, it felt like the city was giving us a green light. And Albany did not waste it.

This was Freestyle Now’s first ever competition in Albany. A milestone worth marking, and the City of Albany backed it from the start. The town showed up with exactly the kind of energy that makes these days worth the drive, warm weather, a packed park and a crowd that was in it from the first run to the last.

Albany Skatepark is a big one. A new section and an old section, each with their own personality, joined together into one of the more diverse skateparks in the state. To celebrate that, the format on the day had riders putting down one run in the new section and one run in the old, with both scores combined to determine the final result. It was a decision that paid off. Riders had to adapt, read different terrain and show a different side of their riding across each run. It added a layer to the competition that kept the crowd guessing and gave every rider a chance to find their best surface across the full park.

A skatepark like Albany’s does something powerful. It draws people in. Around 17 riders made the journey from Perth and regional areas to compete on the day, a number that speaks volumes about what a quality park and a well run event can do for a regional community. When riders are willing to pack their gear and make that kind of trip, it says everything about the reputation Albany Skatepark has built.

Clockwise from top left – Rio Hepworth with a massive no hander out of the big step up. – Scooter rider Cory Vandam brought his skills to the Albany competition and took the win in the open division with all the radness that Corey possesses. – Lorcan Contier took the win in the intermediate BMX, this backflip might have helped with that. – Young Perth skater Sully Arpin made the journey to Albany and went home with a 2nd place in the beginner skate division. – More photos can be found on our Facebook page here.

In scooter, Corey Van Dam made the journey from Waroona to compete in the open division and made every kilometre count, delivering the kind of riding that reminded everyone why open class is worth sticking around for. Local rider Scott Rystenberg pushed hard in second and had the crowd firmly on his side throughout, the kind of home support that makes a competition feel like something more than just a contest.

The skateboard divisions produced two performances that lingered long after the scores went up. Ryan Stamatovic commanded the open division with a run that had real presence, the kind of riding that quiets a crowd for a moment before it erupts. And Fletcher Arpin made the trip down from Perth to compete in intermediate and made it count, putting together a performance well beyond his years to take the division and announce himself as a name to watch.

BMX brought the noise and the numbers to match. Ten riders alone made the trip from Perth to throw down in the BMX divisions, and the locals were ready for them. Joel Weller took out the open division in front of a home crowd that knew exactly who he was, and Lorcan Contier claimed the intermediate title in a division that had depth from top to bottom. These were riders who know this park, who have grown up on this concrete, and it showed in every run they put down.

Across every division, from the youngest beginners stepping into a competition setting for the first time to the open riders pushing the level of what Albany has seen, the day reflected a skatepark community that is alive, growing and ready for more. Freestyle Now is proud to have brought competition to Albany for the first time and grateful to the City of Albany for making it happen. The sun showed up, the riders showed up, the community showed up. We will be back.
