Kalgoorlie Shows Up – Coaching, Community and Competition in the Goldfields

There’s something about Kalgoorlie that always delivers. Maybe it’s the wide open skies, maybe it’s the warmth of the community, or maybe it’s just the pure energy of riders who have been waiting for this moment. Whatever it is, Freestyle Now rolled back into the Goldfields heartland and the skatepark came alive. We’ve been making the trip to Kalgoorlie since 2005, and every time we return, the local scene has grown a little stronger, a little more confident, a little more connected. This visit was no different. On the first day it was all about the coaching sessions, helping participants of all levels, unlock something they were trying. Tricks were learned, confidence was built, and kids who might have been watching from the edge of the park found themselves right in the middle of it. Day two was all about the competition, the sun came out in full, a beautiful clear day with just enough breeze to keep things comfortable, and it was time to compete. Scooters, skateboards and BMX all represented, and the Kalgoorlie community showed up to back every single rider. Every run was met with noise, every bail was met with encouragement, and every podium moment was celebrated like it mattered, because it did.

Scooter beginners had the biggest number with thirteen riders, each one hungry to get out there and show what they had been working on. That kind of numbers in a regional event says everything about the health of the local scene, and the crowd felt it from the very first run.The intermediate class stepped up the skills and brought a sharper edge to proceedings, with Eli Schlinze taking the win, Mason Gilmore pushing hard into second and Patrick Mellington rounding out the podium in third. In the open division it came down to just two riders, Blake Casey and Braxton Shaw, and when it’s that tight there is nowhere to hide. Casey edged it out for the win but Shaw made him earn every bit of it. The skateboard divisions had a different kind of energy. Less about who was going to top the results and more about what was happening on the park itself. Riders were pushing into their runs with a confidence that coaching sessions the day before had clearly helped unlock, and the crowd responded to every moment of it. These were riders finding their feet, finding their style, and finding out what they were capable of in front of a home crowd that wanted them to succeed. One of the highlights of the skateboard session was simply seeing Reilly Fowler back on the park. Reilly is a familiar face in the Kalgoorlie skate scene, someone who has been rolling this concrete for years and has crossed paths with Freestyle Now going as far back as April 2010. There was something fitting about watching him out there again, not competing against anyone, just doing what he loves in the place he knows best. That kind of long term connection to a skatepark and its community is exactly what these events are here to celebrate. BMX brought eight riders in the beginner category and not one of them held anything back. Jake Mellington took first, Lincoln Catmar second and Jaxon Bowling third, but the real story was the energy across the whole field from first run to last. In the intermediate division Mason Panzich was the standout, putting together a performance that had the crowd locked in, with Patrick Mellington in second and Mason Gilmour in third to complete a BMX showcase that sent the day out on a high.

Events like this one are about more than results. They’re about a kid from Kalgoorlie standing on a podium in their own town, about younger riders watching the older ones and deciding they want to be up there next time, about a community that rallies around its skatepark and the young people who call it home. Freestyle Now is proud to keep making the trip out to the Goldfields. We’ll be back, and we can’t wait to see what the Kalgoorlie crew brings next time. A big thanks you to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for all the suport.
