Kalgoorlie Skatepark Competition July 2026 — Freestyle Now Returns to the Goldfields

Freestyle Now returned to Kalgoorlie for three days of action sports, and the Goldfields delivered once again. Two days of coaching set the scene before the Kalgoorlie skatepark competition, and by the time riders dropped in for their runs, the work done on the park over those first two days was written all over every performance.

The competition was originally scheduled for day three but with rain forecast the call was made to move it forward to day two. It was the right call. The Kalgoorlie skatepark competition came alive that afternoon with clear conditions, big energy and a community that showed up to back every single rider.

Scooter had one of the biggest beginner fields of the season with eighteen competitors rolling in. That kind of number at a regional skatepark competition says everything about the health of the Kalgoorlie scene and how much appetite there is for competition out here. In scooter intermediate, Jack Rowe was one of the standouts, inspired by coaching from Oben he was throwing the spinifex trick, spinning the scooter around his foot while standing on the ramp with one foot, the kind of creative flair that reminds you why action sports is different from every other sport out there. Then came scooter open, and John made it count. Having recently relocated to Kalgoorlie from Melbourne, John brought smooth lines and great tricks to take the win in the open division. His presence is already good for the local scene and a first open win in his new home town is a statement.

BMX had its own moments to celebrate. Serg Potekhin made the journey all the way from Perth to throw down in BMX beginners at the Kalgoorlie skatepark competition, a reminder that a well run event at a quality park draws riders in from well beyond the region. In BMX intermediate, Izak Johnson brought loads of heart and energy to his riding, wheelies that had the crowd watching and a spirit on the park that was infectious all afternoon.

Skateboarding had its own story to tell. Celeste stepped into her first ever competition having only had a skateboard in her hands for a few weeks, two days of coaching before the comp giving her the confidence to give it a go. Isla was also competing in her first skateboard competition. Watching both of them take that step, drop in and put themselves out there in front of a crowd is exactly what these events are built around. That kind of courage deserves as much recognition as any podium finish.

On day three, the Freestyle Now team returned to the park for more coaching before the rain finally arrived. True to the forecast, it came, but by then the Kalgoorlie skatepark competition had already been and gone, the riders had had their moment and the community had shown up for it in full.

Kalgoorlie keeps coming back stronger every time Freestyle Now makes the trip out. The coaching builds the foundation and the competition gives riders something to aim for, and when you see first timers stepping up alongside experienced riders pushing each other on the park, you know the scene is in good shape. Big thanks to the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder for their support.
