Freestyle Now BMX Stunt Shows at the Mullewa Agricultural Show

“Your show was the highlight of my day”

Freestyle Now recently made the journey north to the small but mighty town of Mullewa in Western Australia’s Mid West region to deliver BMX stunt shows  at the Mullewa Agricultural Show. Taking the wheel for the weekend were Shaun Jarvis, Sam Grace, Jacob Roughton who is just three shows into his Freestyle Now journey and Geraldton local Jay Furukawa, stepping into his very first Freestyle Now show and bringing some home ground energy to a lineup that was already shaping up to be something special.

Mullewa sits 450 kilometres north of Perth deep in the heart of WA’s Mid West, known for its strong agricultural industry, stunning wildflowers and rich cultural heritage. The kind of town where the agricultural show means something real to the people who live there. The Mullewa District Agricultural Society has been bringing the community together since 1933 and nearly a century later it is still going strong, powered by dedicated committee members and volunteers who donate hundreds of hours every year to make it happen. It is community at its best and Freestyle Now was proud to be part of it.

The morning started cold and windy, the kind of conditions that make you question what the day has in store. The first two shows went ahead in the wind anyway, because that is what Freestyle Now does. By the time the afternoon rolled around Mullewa had other plans. The wind dropped away, a warm spring day opened up and the riding shifted to another level.

With the wind gone and the sun out, the riders opened up and didn’t hold back. Shaun Jarvis, Sam Grace, Jacob Roughton and Jay Furukawa all stepped up and ripped it, putting on shows that had the Mullewa crowd fully locked in. For Jacob just three shows into his Freestyle Now journey and Jay stepping into his very first, there was no hesitation. Both riders took to the ramp like they belonged there and that is exactly the kind of thing that makes a Freestyle Now show special, experienced riders pushing the standard and new riders rising to meet it.

One moment stood out above the rest. It is a rare thing for Shaun to let a new rider jump over him while he stands on the ramp. It takes trust, confidence and a rider who can back it up. Jay Furukawa earned all three. Boosting super high off the jump and throwing a barspin at the same time, Jay cleared Shaun with plenty to spare and brought the crowd to their feet. For a first Freestyle Now show, that is one heck of a statement.

The last show of the day brought one of those moments that you can’t plan and wouldn’t dare try to. The crew set up a backflip train, Jay and Jacob staggered on the jump with Sam coming in last to close it out with a double backflip. Jay came in slightly too far towards the centre of the ramp which left Jacob with less room than he needed going into his flip. Sensing it mid run Jacob pulled back, landed on top of the down ramp and held it together. What nobody saw coming was Sam, already committed and in the air, launching a double backflip clean over the top of Jacob sitting on the ramp below. The crowd had no idea whether it was planned or not. In those moments it doesn’t matter. Sometimes when things go wrong they go so right and this was one of those moments that will be talked about for a long time.

A big thanks to the Mullewa District Agricultural Society and all the volunteers who make the Mullewa Agricultural Show such a special event. It is exactly the kind of community show Freestyle Now loves being part of and we hope to be back.
