Midvale Skatepark Competition Brings the Heat with Crashes, Comebacks and Next-Level Riding
Midvale Skatepark was buzzing as riders from across the region turned up to throw down. The turnout was solid, and the vibes were electric, with young guns and seasoned riders alike pushing their limits. The day wasn’t without its drama – Joshua O’Neil slammed into the six-foot section early on, taking a heavy hit to his ribs and face, but he got back on his bike and kept charging. Opal Harrington also took a crash during warm-ups but soldiered on, showing the determination and grit that make these events so memorable. The skate crew brought a mix of camaraderie, fearless attempts, and rad tricks, while BMX and scooter riders showed progression, style, and big commitment across all divisions.
Scooter riders kicked things off with solid runs. In beginner, Adam Owen took first, Levi Heerema showed big improvement for second – a multi-talented rider also competing in BMX – and James Crichton rounded out third. Intermediate saw Kirill Ashchepkov in first, Cruz West in second, and Spencer Park taking third while showing incredible progression over the past six months and unwavering dedication to scooter riding. Open riders brought the big lines – Flynn Read stepped up from intermediate to open and impressed with fearless riding to take first, Brandon Black, a consistent regular who’s been charging hard all season, landed second, and Lachlan Humes, a new face giving it his all in his first open appearance, rounded out third.

Skateboarders brought energy, style, and fearless riding all day. Beginners set the tone, with Olly Holmes taking the win, Lilah Wahby in second, and Opal Harrington in third – Opal overcame a rough warm-up crash to land on the podium, showing serious grit and determination. Intermediate was stacked with female talent dominating the top three – Scarlett Harrington, Eva O’Driscoll, and Elena Riley all laid down smooth, dialled runs that had the crowd hyped. Open was absolute fire, with Zen Evans throwing a body varial 360 outside his run time that left jaws on the ground, while Yuuki Yasumura and Onyx Black, both stepping up from intermediate, landed second and third, showing they can hang with the top dogs. Fletcher Arpin kept the vibes high all day with rad lines and unstoppable energy, making the skateboard runs a highlight of the competition.
BMX closed out the chaos with speed, power, and serious commitment. In the beginners division, Garnet Rock took the win with smooth, confident riding, Seth Cooper claimed second, and Archie Johnson rounded out the podium, always bringing his trademark smile and positive energy that lifts the whole park. Intermediate had Blake Wylie claim the win, nearly pulling a full four points with an incredible run, with Will Deal in second and Thomas Hollingworth in third, all riding with tight flow and smart run planning that impressed everyone. Open was intense – Albany local Joel Weller stomped the win, tearing up a skatepark we’re sure he’s not totally familiar with, making it even more impressive. Liam Rhodes came in second, continuing to impress with his tenacious riding and consistent progression. Joshua O’Neil, after a brutal early crash into the six-foot, pulled through for third like a champ, leaving the crowd roaring for his grit and determination. The BMX division continues to impress crowds and judges alike, showing that WA BMX is firing and full of talent.
From first drop-in to last trick, the Midvale Skatepark Competition had it all – crashes, comebacks, progression, and stoke for days. Riders pushed themselves and each other, the crowd soaked it all in, and the park came alive with pure BMX, scooter, and skateboard chaos at its finest.
