Freestyle Now Pays Tribute to BMX Bandits at the Opening of Perth Film Studios

“Excellent event, loved the bmx riders”

Some shows are just shows. And then there are moments that only happen once. The opening day of the new Perth Film Studios was one of those moments and Freestyle Now was right in the middle of it.

Invited to perform a special tribute BMX stunt show honouring the iconic Australian film BMX Bandits, Freestyle Now brought the full production to the Perth Film Studios opening celebration. Special tribute shirts were printed for the occasion and handed out to the crowd during the shows, a small piece of history for everyone who was there on the day. Luke Tooze, Andrew Ahumada, Cooper Wilson and Bianca Martin made up the riding crew for the day with Shaun Jarvis holding down the mic after an ankle injury kept him off the bike. Not ideal for Shaun but the riders more than made up for it.

The crowds were fantastic and the riding matched every bit of their energy. Cooper Wilson pushed the boundaries of what most riders would even consider, standing on his upside down bike balanced on top of the ramp while Luke and Andrew launched over the top of him. The kind of trick that makes the crowd go completely silent before erupting. Andrew and Luke also had the under over dialled to perfection, Andrew sending a backflip off the jump while Luke crossed underneath him at the same time. Two riders, two lines, perfectly timed and absolutely spectacular. And then there was Bianca Martin. Going full send on the big ramp Bianca unlocked a large backflip, a massive moment for any rider and one that had the Perth Film Studios crowd absolutely losing it.

Just like when PJ jumped over Goose in BMX bandits Luke Tooze did the same over Cooper Wilson just with a backflip and at more height.

This was a one off. A tribute to one of Australia’s most beloved BMX films, performed on the opening day of a brand new piece of Australian film history. Freestyle Now will never get the chance to perform this show again and that makes it all the more special. For everyone who was there, they witnessed something that will never be repeated. A huge thanks to Perth Film Studios for the invitation to be part of such a landmark day. It was an honour and a privilege to bring the spirit of BMX Bandits back to life on your opening day.
