Future Stars Tear It Up at the WA Freestyle BMX State Championships
What a day. The 2025 WA Freestyle BMX State Championships went down under a Perth sun that felt like it was trying to cook us alive. 39 degrees, no shade, and we wrapped up just as a mega thunderstorm hit. Riders were sipping water like fish in the ocean and still charging the skatepark, respect to everyone who battled the heat and got it done.
We kicked off with the little legends in the under 7s. These tiny humans were throwing themselves off ramps five times their height and making it look easy. Ziggy Ellis was the one to watch, sending huge airs way beyond his size and reminding everyone that BMX runs in the blood, his dad being Shane Ellis, WA BMX legend. Xavier Gellati and Emily Boorder held it down in second and third, both ripping it like pros.
Clockwise from top left – Under 15 womens champion, Bianca Martin, with a huge table top over a hip twice her size. – Logan knibbsadding style to his run for originality points. – Seth Cooper boosting into a nak nak. – Under 15’s Champion, Liam Rhodes going full send. Under 9s next, and this crew brought the stoke. Logan Knibbs was all smiles, throwing shakkkas, and hitting seat stands like he’d been doing it forever. Otis Park, was right behind him, showing off six months of insane progression. Ruby Gellati rounded out the podium, and the whole group had the crowd buzzing with every run. Under 11s followed, with Garnet Rock taking the top spot with a well calculated run and awesome use of the park and Pacey Park, Otis’ older brother, was right behind him. These brothers have been putting in the work and it shows.. raw speed, smooth flow, and pure BMX attitude.
Under 11s state champion and rising star, Garnet Rock. The future is bright for this athlete.
The under 13s were next, and Samuel Evans was dialled. Smooth, finessed runs, riding like he’s been doing this for a decade, travelling the country with his family hitting parks all over, this kid’s got it. Tsuguma Ando took second, Michael Galluccio, who our coaches met earlier in the week and encouraged to join in on the competition came in third, and the rest of the pack, Parker Eastman, Elliot Ashling, Archie Johnson, and Tyler Evans, were throwing down solid runs and keeping it tight.
Under 15s were stacked. Bianca Martin blew everyone away in the women’s division, style, flow, and tricks that made jaws drop. In the men’s, Liam Rhodes was first, Charlie Hill second, and Drew Hancy third. These guys are WA Development Academy riders, and you could see it in every move, clean, confident, and dialled.
Clockwise from top left – Charlie Hill with a huge no footed Can Can over the jumps. – Samuel Evans reaching with everything hes got. – Ziggy Ellis boosting over the jumps with style and grace. – Over 15’s Champion, Jacob Roughton showing us how its done. Over 15s amateur was next level. Jacob Roughton was on another planet, tail whips, massive wall rides, and tricks that no one else was even thinking about. Maison Russell came in second with Naks that left your jaw open and Thomas Hollingsworth third, throwing down smooth, fearless runs that had the crowd losing it.
Big shout-out to our WA Development Academy riders who smashed it and qualified for the Nationals at Rampfest in Melbourne. Bianca Martin, Garnet Rock, Liam Rhodes, Charlie Hill, Jacob Roughton, and Thomas Hollingsworth, you lot were untouchable today. Can’t forget Jay and Kutaro Furukawa, who would’ve been shredding too if it weren’t for injuries. They’ll be back, no doubt. The talent coming out of WA is unreal, and we can’t wait to see these kids represent on the national stage.

All in all, it was a day full of progression, fearless riding, and pure BMX stoke. From the under 7s to the over 15s, everyone who came out was giving it their all. The sun tried to stop us, the storm tried to stop us, but the riders didn’t flinch, and that’s what makes this sport legendary.
