Cooloongup Skatepark Competition 2026: One Run, No Second Chances

The Cooloongup Skatepark Competition delivered a packed and energetic day of riding as part of the Rockingham Youth Fest. Families filled the surrounds, kids ran freely on the grass, food stalls and vendors were buzzing with activity, and competitors were warming up on the half pipe well before their divisions got underway. The atmosphere had that festival feel from the moment we arrived, and the skatepark was humming all day. With the council running to a tight schedule, the format was one run per competitor, meaning no second chances and no room for error. Every rider had to bring it first time, every time.

Scooter kicked things off with a massive beginner field, 13 riders deep and full of energy. Alex Dall stood out from the pack with a clean, smooth street riding style, taking the win convincingly. Kayden Vannasopa Page followed in 2nd and Bailey Pozzetti rounded out the podium in 3rd. With a field that size on a one-run format, the pressure was real and the riders rose to it. Intermediate stepped up the level nicely, with Adam Owen making excellent use of the fly out section, sending overhead tricks and elevating his run above the rest to claim 1st. Taj Driessen came in 2nd and Zael Mehew 3rd in a tight and well-contested division. Open was where things got serious, Reif Holmes put down a massive backflip out of the bowl that had the crowd going, taking 1st in commanding fashion. Corey Van Dam, one of the stronger riders in the division, fumbled slightly in the bowl and didn’t quite hit everything he normally would, leaving the door open and finishing 2nd. Kirill Ashchepkov rounded out the podium in 3rd, with Flynn Read and Brandon Black not far behind.

Clockwise from top left – Open scooter competitor, Flynn Read throwing down a serious backflip out of the roller. – Hazel Bouwer making serious progress, skating powerfully and stylishly. – Rhys Sockett going large and in charge with a table top straight up the biggest quarter in the bowl. – Kohen Mason showing it’s not all about being large and incharge, but style points matter too. Skateboarding brought strong numbers across all three divisions, and the park’s bowl setup played a big part in the day. With walls closer to mini size, it gave beginner and intermediate skaters a great platform to execute tricks with confidence, and they made the most of it. Olly Holmes took the win in beginner, with Opal Harrington finishing 2nd and Daniel Ryan in 3rd. Hazel Bouwer was a standout across the day, showing real progression and precision in her riding on her way to 4th, a sign of things to come. Intermediate delivered one of the tightest finishes of the day, Scarlett Harrington taking 1st by just one point over Onyx Black in 2nd, with Zayne Wood rounding out the podium in 3rd. Eva Jackson deserves a special mention, stepping up from beginners to have her first crack at intermediates and holding her own in a competitive field. Open was a one-man show on the day, but Zen Evans made sure nobody was left wanting. Flowing around the entire bowl with ease, hitting every wall and angle with purpose and style, his run was a masterclass in reading a park and using it to its full potential. A clean, confident performance that reminded everyone watching exactly why open division riding is worth sticking around for.

Jacob Roughton has some great turndowns and this one is proof. Taking the win in the BMX open division

BMX beginner continues to grow with every competition, and Cooloongup was no different, 12 riders deep and full of enthusiasm. It was great to see the Pearce brothers back in the fold with Dexter Pearce taking the win and  Arthur Pearce in 2nd followed closely by  Serg Potekhin in 3rd. Olivia Rhodes deserves a big shout out, finishing 7th but standing out with some original tricks and combinations she had been working on through coaching sessions leading into the event, showing exactly the kind of progression these competitions are built around. Intermediate was a thriller, less than a point separated the top three and only five points covered all eight riders in the division. Tate Wanless was outstanding, nailing trick after trick to claim 1st, and doing it in style by taking the top of the podium for the very first time. A well deserved result for a rider who has been putting the work in and it showed. Rhys Sockett finished 2nd and Garnet Rock in 3rd. Garnet was another highlight, throwing down multiple 360s, bar spins and backflips and really pushing the limits for his age. Open rounded the day out in style, Jacob Roughton finally getting back to the top of the podium after a run of 2nd and 3rd place finishes, taking 1st by a convincing 5.66 points. Liam Rhodes rode well and secured 2nd, nailing the majority of his tricks throughout his run. Joel Weller finished 4th but entertained the crowd as much as anyone, making attempt after attempt to gap from the middle rollers in the bowl to the hip. He wasn’t satisfied, but the crowd absolutely was.

From the first run to the last, Cooloongup proved that these events are about more than just results. One run, no excuses, and a community showing up for each other in a big way. The divisions are growing, the riding is progressing, and with fields this size and talent this deep, the scene in WA is building something real.
