Fremantle Showed Up — BMX and Scooter Competition at Fremantle Skatepark
Fremantle Skatepark came alive once again for another radical BMX and Scooter Skatepark Competition. Thanks to the City of Fremantle, we put the spotlight on 56 riders across BMX and scooter, families lined the park and the atmosphere was electric from the very first run. The format had riders putting down one run in the street section and one run in the bowl, with both scores combined to determine the final result. It was a format that highlighted the diversity of the Fremantle skatepark, rewarded versatility and pushed every rider to bring their best across two very different kinds of terrain.
If the scooter beginner division was anything to go by, the crowd had no intention of staying quiet. Fifteen riders, fifteen runs and the park was alive for every single one of them. The first runs were so tight that ties were scattered across the scoring, leaving everything wide open heading into the bowl. In the end, it was Theo Bourgeois who stood on top of the podium by just one point, Fabien Gepp in second and Brax Booth in third. But the result only tells part of the Theo story. This was his very first competition, and from the moment he dropped in his family were on their feet, hand painted GO THEO signs in hand, screaming every second of it. They elevated the entire vibe of the day, and watching Theo take first place in his debut by the narrowest of margins was grassroots action sports doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
Scooter intermediate was even closer, Curtis Gepp taking the win over Adam Owen by just 0.66 of a point with Taj Driessen rounding out the podium in third. Margins do not get much tighter than that. Then came scooter open, and the story could not have been more different. Corey Van Dam was in a league of his own, winning by a commanding 8.33 points over Flynn Read in second and Nathan Jones in third. In a competition full of razor thin margins, that kind of gap gets noticed.. A special mention has to go to Daniel Bright who finished fourth but deserves far more than a number next to his name. He took a hard slam on his opening trick down the tallest rail, got straight back up and kept pushing, attempting some of the hardest tricks thrown down all day. That kind of heart is what action sports is made of.
Clockwise from top left – Theo Bourgeois and the famous cheering squad in the background. – Nathan Jones has some really nice tabletops and a 3rd place in open scooter division. – Oliver Cuffe-Cain finished sixth but landed his first backflip to concrete which caused him to be mobbed by his peers. – Another first place for Jacob Roughton, a whip over the hip. – More photos can be found on our facebook page here.
BMX beginner packed out the park with fifteen riders throwing down and plenty of progression on show. The top four were separated by less than three points, making it one of the tightest beginner divisions of the day. Theo Bourgeois, already standing on top of the podium in scooter earlier in the day, came back and did it again, taking first place in BMX beginner to complete an extraordinary double on his competition debut. Serg Potekhin came in second and Pacey Park rounded out the podium in third, with Logan Knibbs in fourth and Archie Johnson in seventh both climbing closer to the podium with performances that showed real progression.
BMX intermediate told a similar story of a division packed with talent, ten riders separated by just ten points from top to bottom. Garnet Rock held on to claim the win by the slimmest of margins, just one point ahead of Cohen Haigh in second, with Tsuguma Ando finishing third. Oliver Cuffe-Cain finished sixth but left with something bigger than a placing. He landed his first ever backflip to concrete, not on the first attempt, but with the crowd fully behind him he kept going until it was locked. That moment had the whole park buzzing.
BMX open was a different kind of story altogether. Jacob Roughton took the win and by the time the scores were tallied there was a twenty point gap back to fifth place, a massive spread that showed just how dominant the top end of the open division was on the day. Joel Weller came in second after making the trip all the way from Albany to compete once again, and Charlie Hill rounded out the podium in third with a bowl run that had every trick dialled and locked. Pure class from start to finish.
Thank you to the City of Fremantle for supporting another brilliant day at Fremantle Skatepark. These competitions keep growing because the community keeps showing up, and the Fremantle crew never lets us down. We will be back.
Corey Vandam has been in the scene for many years and its great to have him still throwing down the skills. First in Scooter opens.
